Family of 7 in need – Four new twin mattresses – free of charge or low cost

A  family of 7 needs 4 twin beds for their children.  They would need these (new) by December 15th.  They can potentially afford $100 per.

 Victoria is a single Mom of two children, resides in Brampton and currently doesn’t have any household furniture; therefore, the family play, eat and sleep on the floor.  The children are a boy, age 8 and a girl, age 10.

Her family needs:

  • Two single beds with mattresses for the children
  • Single sized bed sheets and comforters for the children
  • Pillows
  • Dining room table and chairs
  • Couch and/or living room chairs
  • Coffee table

Vita Centre Community Counsellor Flyer

Vita Centre Support in the Community Program’s main objective is to help pregnant and parenting youth to make positive decisions for themselves and their child. The Community Counselor will assist youth in improving their physical and mental health and connect with community and necessary resources.

The following are areas the Community Counselor can help youth with:

  • Crisis counseling
  • Pre/post-natal information and education
  • Advocating on behalf of youth to obtain housing, financial support etc.
  • Suggesting and supporting alternatives to abortion
  • Developing safety plans for those in abusive relationships
  • Assistance in finding suitable housing
  • Baby Items
  • Referrals

The Community Counsellor will assess youth’s needs and assist her to set goals to reach a better quality of life.

FIRST FALL MALTON MOMS MEETING – OCTOBER 28TH

Our First Fall Malton Moms Meeting will be held Wednesday October 28th, in Multipurpose Room 1 from 6-8 pm. Here we will reconnect (many of us havent seen each other in a while), talk about trips we would like to plan, discuss creative arts and new programs we can engage to refuel us as mothers in the Malton Community. Please come and please feel free to bring a friend. The more we grow, the better! Childminding will be available and we will have some refreshments. Please spread the word!

A brief summary:

2. Demeter Press is having a call for Papers for their South Asian Mothering issue. If you are a writer, or have something you would like to say, please review the call for papers. I have been published by ARM, their sister-journal and I can tell you that they are a very woman-focused organization and are willing to work with new and developing writing talent. Poetry, social theory and narrative are all accepted.
 
4. The Malton Community Health Centre will be hosting a series of events designed to engage the community about what services the new centre will need and how community members can guide the work of the new MCHC. We are looking for a dedicated group of people interested in helping us a create a new vision for a healthy Malton. Please consider coming to our first meting, our Meet & Greet, Thrusday October 15th, and finding out how YOU can make a difference!

South Asian Mothering

Demeter Press is seeking submissions for an edited collection by Jasjit Kaur Sangha to be published in 2011.

 This edited collection seeks to unravel the complexity of South Asian mothering by initiating dialogue on what it means to be a South Asian mother. How do embedded cultural values influence South Asian mothering practices? How does non-conformity to South Asian norms and customs affect South Asian mothers? How are South Asian mothers affected by the process of migration? What are the barriers and difficulties experienced by South Asian mothers? What is beneficial about being a South Asian mother? What are the similarities and differences among South Asian mothers?

Theoretical, narrative, arts-informed creative submissions, and international submissions are welcome.

 Topics can include (but are not limited to) South Asian mothering and:

  • Religion and Spirituality
  • MigrationActivism & Resistance
  • Sexuality
  • Queer mothering
  • Feminism
  • Oppression – based on race, class, caste, disability etc.
  • Interracial / Intercultural relationships

The call is open to eligible not-for-profit and for-profit organizations to carry out projects at the local, regional, provincial/territorial and national levels.

The Women’s Program Community Fund provides grants to projects at the local, regional and national levels. The objective of this fund is to address the economic and social situation of women and their participation in democratic life through projects that directly support women in their communities.

Status of Women Canada will focus its support on projects that address its 2009-2010 priorities:

Ø eliminating violence against women and girls;
Ø improving women’s and girl’s economic security and prosperity; and
Ø encouraging women and girls in leadership and decision-making roles
