VOLUNTEERS TO HOST NEWCOMERS

March 25, 2009

Peel Multicultural Council is sincerely recruiting volunteers for our Host Program.
With the assistance and understanding of Host Volunteers, the Host Program helps newcomers overcome the stress of moving to a new environment during the early settlement stage, and achieve a smooth integration into their new communities.
As a Host Volunteer, you can expect to:

  • Build long lasting and rewarding friendships. Many hosts remain friends with newcomers for years! Newcomers will certainly appreciate having a friend like you.
  • Learn about other cultures, languages and countries. Meet interesting people from all over the world. Share a meal, exchange ideas and discover how similar people really are!
  • Help newcomers in English conversation practice, job search support and social orientation. Introduce newcomers to social or recreational activities, go shopping, banking, schooling or learn about the public transit system.
  • Learn about the settlement process, gain confidence and self-esteem. Through our host training sessions and as helping newcomers settle down, you will learn a lot about existing services for newcomers and how you can help them overcome settlement challenges.
  • Receive a certificate after six months of regular, reliable volunteer work, to show your accomplishment by serving and supporting your local community.

Canadian residents who are already established in communities are welcome to join as Volunteer Hosts.
